Many of us have read ā€œThe Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle Eastā€ and look forward to a discussion of Sandy Tolan’s more recent (2015) work, ā€œChildren of the Stone: The Power of Music in a Hard Land.ā€  The book tells the story of the journey of a Palestinian boy from stone-thrower in a refugee camp to music student to founder of a music school in Palestine.  As described on the book jacket,  ā€œA vivid portrait of life amid checkpoints and military occupation, this is a story of determination and vision and a growing movement of nonviolent resistance, and about the potential of music to help children everywhere see new possibilities for their lives.ā€  Like Tolan’s previous book, it is highly readable and meticulously researched.  Eleanor and I both highly recommend it, and hope you will join us for the discussion, hopefully augmented by a related film or video. We will meet in the RE Building Room 23.

We will divide the discussion into three parts, roughly one-third of the book each week, and will confirm the exact pages to be covered prior to the first session.  Eleanor Dwight has several used (in good condition) copies of the book available for loan or purchase, and the Poudre River Library has two copies.  Please contact Eleanor directly (Eleanor@dwightcentral.com) if you are interested in one of her copies.

If you are interested in the book and the discussion, but are not able to attend all three sessions, please free free to attend one or two sessions, as your schedule permits.  For our planning, we will appreciate your letting us know if you plan to participate, and which sessions you expect to attend.  We will provide light refreshments, and encourage you to bring your lunch or a snack to share.
