About Water Communion
Water is more than simply a metaphor. It is elemental and primary, calling forth feelings of awe and reverence.
Carolyn McDade and Lucile Schuck Longview, two Unitarian Universalist woman, wrote these words to describe the essence of the ritual they created in 1980–a ritual that spread across UU congregations and has become an annual tradition for us at Foothills. This ritual is known now as Water Communion.
Water Communion invites each person to collect and bring a small amount of water from a place of deep meaning. Together during the ritual, we co-mingle our waters together. Forming together a small ocean of connectedness and interconnection, from the tributaries of our individual lives.
